Can you believe it has been a full year since I first launched Ink Plus Atlas into the digital world?
One year ago, I started this space with a simple but passionate vision: to create a curated haven where my worlds as a creative writer, an educator, and an avid traveller could beautifully collide. It was built for readers who crave meaning, movement, and a bit of magic in the everyday. Looking back over the past twelve months, it is safe to say we have journeyed through some incredible landscapes together, both on the page and across the globe.
I am incredibly humbled to say that over this past year, thousands of readers from all corners of the world have engaged with this content. Whether you left a comment, shared a post, or silently read along during your morning coffee, your presence has turned this solo writing passion project into a vibrant, living community.
To celebrate this milestone, let’s take a quick stroll down memory lane and look back at some of the stories that have defined our first year together:
The Truths We Tell (and the Ones We Hold Back)
Every writer's journey involves finding their boundary between radical honesty and timing. You might remember my very first piece, "What the Walls Heard." It was a deeply personal, raw reflection, but I ultimately chose to take it down. To be completely honest, I realised that some of my past colleagues simply weren’t ready to hear the truth of what those walls had witnessed. Part of growing as a writer is knowing when to hold your peace, and when to let the work breathe on its own terms.
Whispering Waves and Passport Stamps
From there, our travel diaries took us across continents, uncovering both the chaotic beauty of missed flights and the serene magic of hidden gems. I shared the unexpected in "Midnight in Malaysia," navigating the velvet cover of night after a string of travel mishaps, and found comfort in the routine-busting arrivals of the "Guangzhou Diaries."
Of course, I also took you home to Jamaica. In "Port Royal: My Favourite Place in the World," we walked the sea-swept pavements of Jamaica's historic fishing village, tasting fresh escoveitch fish and watching the Kingston Harbour glow beneath a warm reggae heartbeat.
Stories That Stretch the Soul
Ink Plus Atlas has always been a sanctuary for fiction and raw, honest narrative. This year, we dipped our toes into the rich culinary history of the Jamaica with "From Refuse to Royalty: The Birth of Oxtail as a Delicacy," and explored deep structural roots in "Berry: The Spring Beneath the Stone in August Town."
I also loved sharing longer-form storytelling with my serialised novella, Tide and Flame. Watching you follow Joyce Bannerman’s transformative, solo journey to the warm, violet skies of Port Vila was a true highlight for me, proving that reinvention doesn’t have an expiration date.
Identity, Classrooms, and Looking Forward
Between the travel stamps, I’ve shared the unique perspectives of my life in education, exploring where imagination meets curriculum in "Where Stories Live: Travel Ideas for the English Teacher." And perhaps most importantly, I shared declarations of pride, heritage, and unapologetic presence in powerful personal reflections like "I Am Big, Black, Bold and Beautiful."
Thank You for Journeying With Me!
Whether you are a fellow educator, a passionate writer, a seasoned globetrotter, or simply a kindred spirit who loves a good story, thank you. Thank you for reading, sharing, and bringing your own incredible energy to this space over the last 365 days.
Year one was just the foundation. As we step into our second year, there are more foreign cities to navigate, more classroom musings to dissect, and plenty of new characters waiting to come alive on this page.
Here’s to more learning, more exploring, and continuing to write the world together. Cheers to one year of Ink Plus Atlas.
